# ✉️ How to Add and Personalize Subject Lines

# How to Add and Personalize Subject Lines

You can create several campaign subject lines and personalize them with a recipient's first name or full name.

## Add a subject line

1. Open **Campaigns**.
2. Select the campaign you want to update.
3. Open **Subjects**.
4. Select **Add another subject line**.
5. Type a subject line or use the available AI option.
6. Select **Add**, then **Save Changes**.

## Add a name variable

While editing a subject line, insert either:

- **First Name**; or
- **Full Name**.

Use the variable control shown in the subject editor instead of typing a recipient's name into a campaign-wide subject.

For example, a subject built as:

**{{first_name}}, want my pitch?**

can be personalized for each recipient.

## What happens when a name is unavailable?

PodPitch removes the missing name variable and cleans up the opening punctuation and capitalization.

For example:

**{{first_name}}, want my pitch?**

is sent as:

**Want my pitch?**

The message should not be sent with an empty placeholder or an awkward leading comma.

## Subject-line testing

Personalized results from one subject template still count as one subject line in campaign testing. Adding a name variable does not create a separate test variant for every recipient.

## Edit one email manually

To customize the subject for a single email:

1. Switch the campaign to **Manual Mode**.
2. Select the email.
3. Edit the subject line above the email body.
4. Review the recipient and message before sending.

## Before enabling Smart Mode

Preview several subjects and confirm that:

- the variable is placed naturally;
- the fallback reads well without a name;
- punctuation and capitalization are correct;
- the subject matches the pitch; and
- the subject does not overstate the relationship or opportunity.
